OBITUARY IN THE NEW YORK TIMES 1853
Recent deaths: ADMIRAL SIR THOMAS BLADEN CAPEL G.C.B. who died lately at the advanced
age of 77 years was in active service for 31 years. He was the youngest son of William, 4th Earl of Essex. He entered the
Navy March 22nd, 1782. After participating July 23rd 1795 in Lord Bridport's action, he was appointed May 16th 1796 as acting
Lieutenant. In April 1798 Mr Capel was appointed to the Vanguard, 74, flag-ship of Sir Horatio Nelson by whom, in acknowledgement
of his services as signal-leutenant at the Battle of the Nile, he was advanced, August 4. He shared in the battle of Trafalgar,
and at its close saved from destruction the prize ship of the line Swiftsure. He commanded afterwards La Hague, 74, and sharing
generally in the warfare with the United States.
